What is an Emerald
The Green Variety
of Beryl
An emerald is the green variety of beryl, coloured primarily by trace amounts of chromium and/or vanadium. On paper, emerald is fairly hard at Mohs 7.5–8, but it's often less "tough" than you'd expect — because it commonly contains internal fractures and inclusions called jardin (French for "garden").
That's why emerald buying is different from diamond buying. It's less about perfection and more about character — the living green, the internal world, the story of the stone.
Inclusions are so expected in natural emerald that clarity is judged completely differently than in diamonds. The internal "garden" is not a flaw — it is a fingerprint. It tells you this stone grew in the earth.
Two Origins
Both are Real.
Both are Beautiful.
Natural Emerald
Formed in the earth over geological time through hydrothermal processes. Every natural emerald carries the marks of that journey — its jardin, its colour zoning, its unique internal world. No two are alike. They are prized for their rarity, individuality, and the romance of their origin.
Lab-Grown Emerald
Created through controlled growth processes — most commonly hydrothermal or flux methods. Many lab-grown emeralds are true synthetic emerald: the same chemical, physical, and optical properties as natural emerald. They tend toward cleaner clarity and consistent colour — often letting you access a bolder aesthetic for your budget.
What They Share
More Alike Than
You Might Think
-
Same gem material. Lab-grown emeralds are synthetic beryl — not an imitation, not a simulant. Chemically and physically identical to natural emerald.
-
Same hardness. Both sit at Mohs 7.5–8, making them suitable for fine jewellery with proper care.
-
Same visual impact. A great emerald is a great emerald — green that makes you stop scrolling. Lab or earth, the colour can be extraordinary.
-
Same care requirements. Both need gentle cleaning and protection from ultrasonic cleaners and harsh chemicals.
Both natural and lab-grown emeralds share this hardness rating — durable enough for rings and everyday pieces with mindful care.
Where They Differ
The Four Factors
That Actually Matter
Origin: Earth-Made vs Lab-Grown
Natural emeralds are formed over geological time through hydrothermal processes deep in the earth. Lab-grown emeralds are created through controlled laboratory growth. This difference mostly affects rarity, collectability, and the story you're buying into — not the stone's beauty or durability.
Clarity: The Jardin Factor
Natural emeralds almost always show internal features — the famous jardin — and that's completely normal. Lab-grown emeralds can look cleaner and more consistent to the eye, especially at larger sizes. Under magnification, gem labs can identify different growth features between the two.
Treatments: Where Emeralds Are Unique
This is where emeralds differ from almost every other gemstone. Many natural emeralds are clarity-enhanced — most commonly with traditional oils or modern resins — to help their green appear more even and luminous. This is a normal, widely accepted practice in the emerald world. Lab-grown emeralds do not typically require this treatment.
Value Story: Rarity vs Impact
Natural emeralds are priced with rarity in mind — especially when colour is strong and the stone has that beautiful, lively glow even with inclusions. Lab-grown emeralds are priced around visual impact and accessibility — often letting you get a cleaner emerald aesthetic for the same budget. Neither is more correct. They are simply different value propositions.
